Sometime around 2015, the unspoken contract between people and the software they used at work changed.
Before: software was a tool. You opened it when you needed it. It did the thing. You closed it.
After: software is an environment. It's open all day. It pings you. It changes its layout in the next release without asking. It nudges. It has opinions about how you should spend the next hour. It interrupts your morning to ask whether you want to enable a new AI feature.
This isn't an accident — it's a business model. Engagement metrics drive the roadmap. The product manager who designed the notification you just dismissed has a quarterly target tied to your dismissal rate.
We don't think this contract is fixable inside the companies that wrote it. The incentives point the wrong way. So we're building software on the other side of the line — tools that open, do the thing, and close. Tools that don't have an opinion about your morning. Tools that respect the fact that you have other things to do.
